Biography

Henry was born before 1788. He was the son of John Banta and Polly Riker. He removed to Switzerland County, Indiana, and was known as "Old Smoke" and "Sheriff Hank", having served two terms in that county. He died about 1833. (He had two cousins named Henry residing in that county at the same time).

Notes • Note 1505. HENRY BANTA married Nancy DeMott. He removed from Kentucky to Switzerland County, Indiana, where he was a farmer, his farm adjoining that of two cousins with the same name as himself. He was known as "Old Smoke," and also as "Sheriff Hank." In 1829 he was elected Sheriff of the County and held the office two terms. He died about 1833. 2626 - MOSES M. married Cynthia Ann Beckley. He enlisted in Co. F, 83d Indiana Regiment Aug. 15, 1862, and was mustered out of the service June 1, 1863. At that time he resided at Versailles, Ripley Co., Ind. 2626 - NANCY married James Dodd. 2626 - WASHINGTON A. married Sarah Crowder. He resided at Versailles Indiana. Enlisted Aug. 15, 1861. in Co. K. 22d Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. He died May 31. 1864, of wounds received at the battle of Rome. (Note: It was his son Washington A. who volunteered and was killed) ISSUE 1 John enlisted Aug. 15, 1861, in Co. K., 22d Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. Was killed at the battle of Perrysville Oct. 8, 1862. 2 William enlisted Aug. 15. 1861. in Co. K. 22d Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. Was killed at Perrysville Oct. 8, 1862. 3 Joseph Is a railroad engineer. 4 Moses is a railroad engineer. 5 Lafayette is a railroad engineer. 2626 - MARY married Joseph Ellis 2626 - MARTHA married William Voiles. 2626 - KEZIAH married Albert Voris. 2626 - MARGARET married John Wesley Beckley.
