Research Notes

  • On 17 July 1885 William Lum and Curtis Lum personally appeared at the Shiawassee Co. Court with a Hiram C. Barber as witnesses for Hiram's Application for Civil War Invalid Pension, pages 249 and 250. There is no relationship mentioned on the document, but it may be that Hiram could have been a brother or cousin to Betsy. [3]
  • In Hiram's military medical records there are a couple of references to epilepsy. Could this be a connection with the epilepsy that is found with some of Betsy Barber's descendants? In Civil War Widow's Pension File page 268[3]
  • Also, in Hiram's Civil War Widow's Pension File, one of the affidavits confirms that Hiram is a cousin to William E. Barber, son of David Barber and Catherine Selfridge of Ingrahm Co., Michigan and his sisters Polly Critchett and Phebe Dowers. Several family trees show Betsy Barber as the daughter in this family, but there is no documentation and analyzing the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census information concludes that Betsy is likely not a child in this family.
  • There is also no documentation to place the family of David Barber and Catherine Selfridge in Cayuga Co., NY in 1846 when Betsy was married, although, Catherine's brother William Selfridge and his wife, Betsy Jane Barber may have lived in Cayuga, NY then.
  • Ozias Barber, born between 1791 and 1799 in New York and died after 1840, was probably the father of Betsy Barber. Betsy was likely born in Tyre, Seneca Co., New York. There is documentation that she was married in 1846 in Venice, Cayuga Co., the 1840 census for Ozias Barber places her in the county with her family. There is a strong probability that Hiram C. Barber and Betsy Barber were siblings (as evidenced by DNA match between descendants), which the 1840 census can support. (Ozias/Orsian Barber is listed as father on Hiram Barber's death certificate.) Thus, assuming if Ozias Barber was Hiram's father and Hiram and Betsy were siblings, Ozias should be Betsy's father, also.
