Biography

Origin

We can not say with any certainty who the father of William H. Barber might be. What we do know is William resided in Greenup County, Kentucky near the families of Joseph, Pleasant and Phoebe Barber. Looking at the households for Joseph and Pleasant in the 1840 census the males in an age group to be William have been accounted for so that leaves Phoebe as his possible parent. The household of Joseph Barber in the 1840 census for Greenup County, Kentucky has a female in the proper age category to be Phoebe and the three young children in Joseph's household are in the proper categories to be the children of Phoebe. [1]In addition, in the 1850 census Nancy Barber, widow of Joseph, was residing in the household of Jacob and Phoebe Barber Hood. (Jacob was Phoebe's second husband). So, the available documentation tends to lean to Phoebe being the mother of William Barber.

There is an alternate possibility, however, for the parents of William H. Barber. He could be the son of Pleasant Barber and his first wife Sarah Markey who were married 11 June 1829 in Botetourt County,Virginia. Sarah died before 1832 when Pleasant married his second wife Jane Minter in Bedford County,Virginia. However, the 1830 census for Botetourt County, Virginia shows the Pleasant Barber (age 20-30) household included one female, age under 5 and one female age 15-20. Was there enough time between the census and Pleasant's second marriage for the birth of another child? Pleasant Barber, b a 1808 was the son of Joseph and Nancy Barber. He came to Greenup County, Kentucky about 1839 according to tax lists.

Birth

The first record for William Barbour is on the tax list was in 1849 Greenup County, Kentucky and thus we assume he was 18 - 21 years old. He owned no land. [2]

He was in the 1850 census for Greenup County, Kentucky and gave his age as 20, born in Virginia.[3]

William H Barber M 20 Virginia
Amanda Barber F 16 Kentucky
William H Barber M 9/12 Kentucky

Marriage

William Barbour married Amanda Bellomy on 14 November 1848 in Greenup County, Kentucky. James Stewart was Bondsman. (James H. Stewart was Amanda's uncle by marriage. Her mother's sister, Elizabeth Stewart (b1798), married 1823 Greenup Co., KY, James H Stewart b 1795.) [4]

Family

The 1860 census for Greenup County, Kentucky may shed some light on family relationships because Hezekiah Barber, born about 1835 in Virginia was living with William Barber and his family. [5] Hezekiah was a son of Phoebe Barber so it isn't too big a stretch to see William might be a brother since there was only a few years difference in their ages.

Tax Records

In 1867 William H Barber paid taxes in Greenup County, Kentucky but he is not listed after that year. His wife, Amanda Barber paid taxes in Greenup County in 1868 and 1870 but neither William or Amanda paid taxes in 1869. [6][7] [8] [9]

Death

That is about all we know since William Barber disappears from the records about 1870. His family remained in Greenup County but William's fate remains unknown.
