Pleasant Barber used both the surname Barber and Hood. His mother Phoebe married Jacob Hood 17 November 1842 in Greenup County, Kentucky which was 8 months after Pleasant's birth. Phoebe's children Hezekiah and Nancy used the surname Barber but also used the surname Hood. Her other children, Tabitha and Bluford were definitely children of Jacob Hood and never used the surname Barber.

A birth date of 27 Mar 1842 has been attributed to him but documentation is lacking, therefore his birth on this profile has been given as 1844 which is the date on his tombstone.

1890 census Ashland, of Union Veterans and Widows of the Civil War, Boyd County, Kentucky. Pleasant Barber, resided 914 Front Street, Ashland, Kentucky. No further information given. [8]

According to a questionnaire dated 21 Dec 1897 filled out by Jennie Barber the daughter of Pleasant Barber regarding his Civil War pension (and included in his pension record) he had four children living at that time. They were: Jennie Barber, born May 24, 1867; Lucy Bell Barber born Oct 7, 1868; Minnie Lou Barber born April 15, 1872 and Myrtle May Barber born November 36, 1874.

He died 1897 and was buried in the Ashland Cemetery, Boyd County, Kentucky.
