Biography

" In 1633, James Barber (1588-1648), his wife, Unknown (Wife) Barber (1600-16??), and their three (3) sons, William b. 1619, James b. 1620, Joseph b. 1626, and three (3) daughters, Mary b. 1618, Elizabeth b. 1624, and Patience b. 1628, emigrated from England to the harbor area of Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1635 the family moved from Massachusetts Bay Colony to the area of the future Town of Newport on Acquidneck Island in the future Rhode Island & Providence Plantations."

However, James Barber is not profiled in Anderson's Great Migration series, drawing into question claims that he came over anytime before 1636.

A set of family pages on Ancestry.com shared the family legend that:

"two brothers Thomas and James from the county of Berkshire, England, descendants of Thomas Barber, an officer in Cromwell's Army came to this country, landing at or near Boston, MA. Thomas Barber went to Windsor, CT with others and this is the connection to the CT Barber's."[1]

He then moved to current Rhode Island in 1635. He obtained half share in property in Westerly,R.I. in 1661.[citation needed]

Notes supporting and clarifying the above story - by Richard Davis Barber in Oct 2008:

"Possibility exists that family emigrated together, son (possibly William Barber (abt 1618 to Unk), father, and mother (Unknown-Barber abt 1600 - abt 1638). A daughter Mary, was also born in 1618 and should have also accompanied the family."[2]

James Barber, the primary Immigrant, landed at Newport, Rhode Island [3]
