Biography

Hosea Barber Jr. was born on 13 September 1799 in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island. He was the son of Hosea Barber Sr. and Catherine Lanphere.

He married Fanny Pendleton 4 October 1821 in Westerly. Together they had at least ten children.

The family migrated to Alfred, Allegany, New York in May 1829. Hosea would go on to work as a farmer here for the rest of his life. On tax rolls, he was considered a manufacturer. He owned upwards of 66 acres of land in the Five Corners community near the town border with West Almond, about two miles west of Alfred Centre.

Hosea passed away on 1 May 1873 in Alfred, and was buried in Alfred Rural Cemetery.

Last Will & Testament

Know all men by these presents that I Hosea Barber of the town of Alfred, County of Allegany and State of New York of the age of seventy one years and being of sound & ? mind and memory do make publish and declare this my last will and testament in manner following that is to say:

After the payment of my debts and all proper claims against my estate - I give and bequeath and devise to my beloved wife Fannie Barber all the estate both personal and real of every name and nature, of which I may die seized or to which I may in any way be entitled to have and to hold the same in her own proper right and person, and to her heirs or assigns.

I desire it distinctly understood that my children or their heirs are not left out of any material[?] in this last will and testament from any feeling of un[?] toward them or either of them best[?] simply because I think their mother, my said wife, Fannie Barber is entitled to the whole of my estate and that there will not be more than will be needed to [?] her maintenance and [?] in [?].

And lastly I hereby nominate and appoint my said wife Fannie Barber sole Executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

In [?] whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this second day of October in the year of our lord, one thousand eight hundred and seventy.
