Death of Mr. S. Barber.
On the 12th instant one of the few remaining links connecting us with the pioneers of Australian settlement was broken, and one of the oldest of the native-born population of this colony passed away, in the person of Mr. Samuel Barber, of Margaret Hall, Guildford. Mr. Barber, who, at the time of his death, had entered on his 89th year, was the son of a non-commissioned officer in one of the British regiments stationed here at the beginning of the present century; and was born either at Castle Hill or at Parramatta, less than a dozen years after the founding of the colony. His parents afterwards engaged in storekeeping in the town — their place of business being situated on the river bank at the foot of Charles street. The house itself has long since disappeared, but the site is still in the hands of the family. Extent records show that in 1830-1, the gentleman just deceased was in charge of the Government Primary School at Castle Hill. Between 1835-40 he engaged in pastoral pursuits, and was one of the first to open up stations in the Murrumbidgee district. His ventures were crowned with considerable success; and he was ultimately in a position to retire personally from the activities and anxieties of a pastoralist's life, though he still retained his interest in his Riverina properties. Mr. Barber was connected with many of the best known families of this district. He was the brother-in-law of the late Hon. Jas. Byrnes, and of the late Mr. G. Hunt (father of Mr. G. T. Hunt, J.P.); and was related also to other prominent residents in and around "old Parramatta." He was married three times and leaves six children — three sons and three daughters; also 28 grandchildren, and at least 10 great-grandchildren. The cause of death was senile decay. [2]

A week before his death Mr. Barber had the top of one of his fingers wrenched off through it becoming entangled between the harness and a dray to which he was yoking a horse, and he never rallied from the shock.[3]
