Biography

Ira Barber (1801-1866) was a farmer who lived in Bedford County, Tenn., and Calloway County, Ky.

Born in Onslow County, N.C. on May 11, 1801, Ira was the son of John Barber and Mary Gibson Barber. By 1811 the family had relocated to Wilson County, Tennessee.

On 17 December 1819 in Wilson County, Ira married Nancy Leath (his father served as bondsman), and the couple soon took up residence in Bedford County, Tennessee. Ira appears in Bedford County in the censuses of 1830 and 1840, as well as the Bedford County tax lists of 1836, 1837, and 1838 (which indicate that he lived in District 5). Between 1840 and 1842 Ira sold three parcels of land in Bedford County and relocated to Calloway County, Ky. On 19 July 1842, Ira Barber and Thomas W. Clanton sold 102 acres in District 5 of Bedford County to John Taylor and John M. Barber[1]; the sale included livestock and furniture items.

The 1850 and 1860 censuses show Ira living with his family in Calloway County, Ky., owner of a farm worth $3700 by 1860. Ira died there on 16 April 1866 per his tombstone. He is buried in a family plot designated Barber Cemetery.[2] The cemetery is located just off US Highway 641 about four miles south of Murray, Ky. Nancy survived until 1888 and was buried in the same cemetery.

1860: Calloway County, Kentucky[3]
