Biography
William was born in 1837 in Tennessee, son of Elisha Barcroft and Martha Hutchinson. The family moved to Smith County Texas in about 1839. William joined the 3rd Texas Cavalry in 1861. He was captured by Union forces at Vicksburg in October 1863 and taken to the Alton Military Prison. There he died on 18 Feb 1864. His name is on the monument at the Confederate Cemetery as "W H Bancroft"
