Ezekiel was in Philadelphia, working as a brickmaker at the onset of the Civil War. He enlisted and served with the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. [1]
Birth
It is not known where Ezekiel was born. In the 1850 Census it was "unknown" [2] while in 1860 it was "Deleware." [3]
Marriage

Military Service
Ezekiel enlisted as a Private in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry - the first regiment made up entirely of enlisted men of color - and was assigned to Company B. He was 36 years old, married and working as a brickmaker when he enlisted on 11 March 1863 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[8]
Death
Ezekiel's date of death is alternately given as 9 or 10 December 1863. It is likely that he died on 9 December and was interred on the 10th. He passed away at the Regimental Hospital on Morris Island in South Carolina, of dysentery. [9] [10] He was buried in Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina in Section 16 Site 1268.
