Biography

Early years

Henry was born about 1785. He was the son of John Barfield & Mary Barfield, and was baptised on 30 June 1785 in England, United Kingdom.[1]

Marriage

Henry married Susan Gurkin on 31 October 1809 in the Archdeaconry of Sudbury, Suffolk.[2]

Children

Henry and Susan had 8 children:

  • Susan was born on 21 July 1812 and baptised on 2 August 1812 in Pakenham, Suffolk.[3]
  • Henry was baptised on 4 September 1814 in Suffolk.[4]
  • Mary was baptised on 19 January 1817 in Suffolk.[5]
  • Sophia was baptised on 21 March 1819 in Langham.[6]
  • John was baptised on 10 June 1821 in Suffolk.[7]

Death of Henry and his wife

His wife, Susan, died on 20 Jun 1867, aged 80. She was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary's in the Field, Langham.[14][15]

Henry died in Langham almost a year later, age 83, on 4 May 1868. His death was registered in the Stow district. He was buried alongside his wife at St. Mary's.[16][17]

Probate records read:

The will of Henry Barfield late of Langham in the County of Suffolk Farmer deceased who died 4 May 1868 at Langham aforesaid was proved at Bury St Edmunds by the oath of Jonathan Balls of Woolpit in the County aforesaid Farmer the sole Executor.[18][19]

Henry makes one last appearance in the records. He is listed in the 1869 Post Office Directory under Langham. Langham's entry gives interesting information including that the population in 1861 was only 293 people, that it has a school, and that the chief crops (likely grown by Henry as a farmer) were wheat, barley, oats and turnips. It mentions Fuller Maitland Wilson as the lord of the manor and the sole landowner, so we know that Henry was a tenant farmer.

Who was Jonathan Balls, farmer, the executor of his will? Son-in-law, Grandson? Did he take over the lease of his land?
