Biography

Hiram engaged in farming in Texas.

Hiram was born December 13, 1815, in North Carolina. According to her Texas Death Certidate, Hiram's daughter, Eliza, is born in Alabama on April 13, 1839.

According to her Texas Death Certificate, Hiram's daughter, Desdemona "Destia", is born in Alabama on March 9, 1843.

By 1850, at the age of 34, Hiram has started a family with Mary Musselwhite in Benton, District 28, State of Alabama. He is issued a land grant in Alabama, in 1859. This document gives him the legal right to sell that property, which he does, because he is already in Polk County, Texas, for the 1860 United States Census. According to the Texas Death Certificate for Stephen Floyd Barfield, Hiram's son, Stephen is born January 13, 1865. In all of these documents, Mr. Barfield is listed only as Hiram Barfield. In the 1860 United States Census in Texas, a son is listed as "Hiram D. Barfield." He registers to vote inTexas before 1870 and passed away November 19, 1899, in Polk County, Texas.

Research Notes

In the United States Census Record of 1850 for the 28th District, Benton County, Alabama, the household of H. Barfield, aged 34, and Mary Barfield, aged 33, lists the following members: 1. [Barfield-1066 | Hiram Barfield], aged 34; 2. [Musselwhite-141 | Mary Musselwhite Barfield], aged 33; 3. [Barfield-1106 | Susan Elizabeth Barfield Williams], aged 10; 4. [Barfield-1065 | Gabriel Washington Barfield], aged 8; 5. [Barfield-1105 | Isabelle Narcissa Barfield], age 6; 6. [Barfield-1034 | Desdemona Barfield], aged 5; 7. [Barfield-1102 | Hiram Decator Barfield], aged 4;

Then, in the United States Census Record of 1860, Precinct #4, Post Office of Livingston, Polk County, State of Texas, taken on 30 July 1860, the Barfield household now has grown to include the following members: 1. [Barfield-1066 | Hiram Barfield], aged 44; 2. [Musselwhite-141 | Mary Musselwhite Barfield], aged 42; 3. [Barfield-1106 | Susan Elizabeth Barfield Williams], aged 18; 4. [Barfield-1065 | Gabriel Washington Barfield], aged 18; 5. [Barfield-1105 | Isabelle Narcissa Barfield], age 16; 6. [Barfield-1034 | Desdemona Barfield], aged 14; 7. [Barfield-1102 | Hiram Decator Barfield], aged 7;

Now are added these additional names to the household: 8. [Barfield- | William Cicero Barfield], aged 13; 9. [Barfield- | Henry L. Barfield], aged 11; 10. [Barfield- | Clarissa J. Barfield], aged 9; 11. [ Hysaaon- | Acrias Hysaaon], aged 4; 12. [Hysaaon- |Mary E. Hysaaon], aged 2.

We know that [Barfield-1065 | Gabriel Washington Barfield] enlisted in Company B, 1st Texas Regiment, on April 29, 1861; his military headstone is placed in the Old City Cemetery, Livinston, Polk County, Texas.

All of the aboved children in the 1860 census are reported as being born in Alabama.

Then, in the United States Census Record of 1870, Sub-division 21, Post Office of Livingston, Polk County, State of Texas, taken on 25 June 1870, the Barfield household now only includes the following members: 1. [Barfield-1066 | Hiram Barfield], aged 54; 2. [Musselwhite-141 | Mary Musselwhite Barfield], aged 52; 3 . [Barfield-1105 | Isabelle Narcissa Barfield], age 26; 4. [Barfield-1034 | Desdemona Barfield], aged 14; 5. [Barfield-1102 | Hiram Decator Barfield], aged 16; 6. [Barfield- | Janes Barfield], aged 20; 7. [Barfield- | Mary Barfield], aged 14; 8. [Barfield- 1104 | Martha Ophelia Barfield], aged 9.

In the 1870 Census, the enumerator spells "Barfield" as "Bearfield"; other given names are also somewhat confused. That is a reason for working up these Research Notes, to try to unravel the confusion, and to separate children of the first generation from the "grand" children of the second generation. The elder children of the first generation who are not still in the Hiram Barfield household of the 1870 U. S. Census are presumed married and starting their own households.
