Biography

Edwin Albert Barfoot was born on the 20th of October 1889 [1]son of Edward Barfoot and his wife, Emma Varndell, and was raised in Bishop's Waltham in Hampshire, England. [2] [3] He enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry on the 5th of September 1907 [4] and at the 1911 Census was stationed at the Royal Marine Barracks at Forton in Gosport. [5]

In 1916 Edwin was serving aboard HMS Queen Mary, captain Cecil Irby Prowse.

Edwin was killed at the Battle of Jutland on the 31st of May 1916 when his ship HMS Queen Mary exploded. [6] [7] Officially memorialised at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, his death is also recorded at the war memorial in Bishops Waltham with others who died in WW1 over the four year period 1914-1918.
