Note: Surname variants include: Baribeau, Barbeau, Barbaut, Barbault, Baribaud , Barribault ... A French source is recommended for confirmation.

Note: " The cadastral map drawn by the engineer Catalogne in 1709 showed that Francois Baribeau and his sons were all living on the left bank of the Batiscan River. There were five parcels in the name of Baribeau." Given the probability that Francois could read and write French, the identification of the land parcels given by the Jesuits and mapped by Catalogne are strong indicators that his surname at that time was Baribeau. Note: Barbeau, Barbot, Barbaud, Barbault , Barbaux, and Barbeaux have the same sound in French when pronounced. [1] [2] Baraboo-1 12:57, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

" The Quebec, Genealogical Dictionary of Canadian Families (Tanguay Collection), 1608-1890 Genealogical Dictionary of Canadian Families from the Foundation of the Colony to the Present Day, or the "Tanguay Collection", is the premier genealogical dictionary of French-Canadian families. This large, seven-volume collection was published by the French-Canadian priest and genealogist Father Cyprien Tanguay from 1871 to 1890. Although the dictionary does contain numerous errors and occasional speculations, it has proven to be a fundamental reference work and one of the most comprehensive resources for French-Canadian genealogy. " [3]

This collection is a valued treasured resource. However, some transcribers who later helped were not fluent in the French language of the period , relied on written manuscripts, relied on verbal references and were translated from previous work that lack sourcing. The records were written over a hundred years later and continue to be subject to confirmation and correction. Corrections can be sent to Baraboo-1 12:55, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
