Biography

Mary Ann Barker was born in 1843 in Parr. She was the daughter of Michael Barker and Mary (Harrison) Barker.

Mary Ann's sister Catherine was born in 1845. Her birth was registered in the final quarter of the year, in Prescot district.

Mary Ann's brother James was born in about 1851, either in Parr or in Ireland depending which census you believe.[1]

Mary Ann's father died in about 1853, aged 33. His death was registered in the first quarter of 1853, in Prescot district.

Mary Ann's mother married Henry Twist in 1858 at St Helens Parish Church.[2] He was a widower with children.

Mary Ann's half-sister Phoebe Twist was born in about 1859. Another half-sister, Eliza, was born in 1861.

By April 7th 1861, Mary Ann was living with her grandmother, Phoebe South, in Broad Oak, Parr. Mary Ann was working as a glass smoother; her grandmother was a former agricultural labourer.

Mary Ann married John Eden on September 14th 1862 at St Thomas's Church in Eccleston, St Helens. John was 22, Mary Ann was 19. It was a first marriage for both, and both were said to be residing in Eccleston; neither could sign their name. John was a collier. The fathers were Henry Eden (collier) and Michael Barker (bricklayer). The witnesses were William Francis, and Catherine Barker. William Francis was probably the nephew by marriage of John's deceased aunt Martha (Morris) Francis.

By April 2nd 1871, John and Mary Ann were living in Clipsley Row in Haydock. John was working as a collier, and the couple had three children - Peter (aged 7), Martha (5) and baby Ellen. The older two had been born in Parr, the baby in Haydock. The household also contained a boarder, a young collier from Rochdale; Mary Ann's brother James Barker (another collier); and John's sister-in-law Phoebe Twist (aged 12, and born in Peasley Cross, Sutton).

John's mother died in 1880.

By April 3rd 1881, they were living in Clipsley Lane, Clipsley Row, Haydock. John was still working as a collier, as was Peter, now 17. Martha, now 15, was working as a paper reeler in a printing works. Ellen was 10, and there were four younger children - Mary Ann (7), Rachel (5), Ruth (3) and baby Harriett. John's brother William, another collier, was living with them.

Peter married and left home in 1884.

Martha married and left home in 1890. Peter's wife died in 1890 and he and his daughter Maud moved back in with John & Mary Ann.

By April 5th 1891, John & Mary Ann were living in Clipsley Cottages in Haydock. John was still working as a collier, as was Peter. Ellen was working at the glassworks. Mary Ann, now 18, was working on a farm. Rachel, now 15, was working as a live-in domestic servant in another household in Clipsley Lane. Ruth, now 13, was also working as a live-in domestic servant, in Holly Bank, Haydock. There were three younger children - Harriet (10), Margaret (9), John Edwin (5), and also Peter's daughter Maud aged two.

Ellen married and left home in 1892.

Peter remarried in 1894 and set up house with his new wife, but Maud may have stayed with her grandparents. Mary Ann junior married and left home the same year.

John's father died in 1895.

By March 31st 1901, John & Mary Ann were living in Clipsley Lane, Haydock. John was still working as a collier. Rachel was still single, and working as a cook in Hertfordshire. Ruth was working as a parlourmaid in St Helens, so not with John & Mary Ann either. But Harriet, now 20, was still with her parents, and working from home as a self-employed dressmaker. So were Margaret - now 18, and a grocer's cashier, and John Edwin - now 14, and working on railway waggon labeling. And Peter's daughter Maud, now 12, was also still with her grandparents.

Margaret was married in 1903 in Haydock; Ruth was married in 1904 in Haydock; and Harriet in 1905.

By April 2nd 1911, John and Mary Ann were living in Haydock. John, at 69, was still working as a colliery labourer below ground; Mary Ann, 68, as a shop keeper, with Rachel (aged 34) assisting her. John Edwin, now 24, was working as a blacksmith in an engineering works. Maud, aged 22, was a printer's assistant in a litho and printing works. Another granddaughter, Ruth Heyes aged 10, was also in the household. She may have been just visiting on census night.

John died in 1918 in Warrington district, the district for Haydock. He was 77. He was buried on June 12th 1918 at St Peter's Church in Parr. Mary Ann died March 22nd 1926 at the age of 82, and was also buried at St Peter's.
