Biography

Martha Jane Barker was born in Hoyt, Kansas on 15 July 1857. She was the daughter of William Barker and Arzela Hainline of Kentucky. She was sixteen years old when she married John Lou Crosswhite at the Topeka County, Kansas Courthouse on 19 November 1873.

After their marriage John and Martha Jane lived in Kansas for about seven years where their first three children were born. In 1881 Martha Jane and her husband moved to Florence, Colorado where they bought a ranch and raised cattle. After losing most of their cattle during the brutal blizzards of 1886 and 1889, the Crosswhites moved to Oklahoma in 1890 where Indian lands of the Oklahoma Territory had opened up for “white settlement”. The Crosswhites purchased a 160-acre homestead in Canadian County from someone who was selling out. Prior to 1830 Canadian County was once occupied by the Wichita Indians. Through the years the Crosswhites purchased two other farms and a fruit orchard. Together they had thirteen children. Ten survived to adulthood.

Martha Jane died at the age of 73 on 9 Jan 1931 in Hennessey, Kingfisher, Oklahoma a year after her husband John passed away. Martha and her husband are buried at Lyon Valley Cemetery, Hennessey, Kingfisher, Oklahoma.[1]
