Biography

Robert Barker (1820-1899) was born about May 1820 in Spark Bridge in Lancashire. He was the son of the forgeman there, William Barker and his wife Jane Jackson and was christened at Penny Bridge chapel (Egton cum Newland chapelry) on the 21st May 1820. [1] He was from a large family and surprisingly for the time, all but one of his siblings grew to adulthood.

Like several of his older siblings he went south to the city of Liverpool to find work in the shipping industry. He likely learned his blacksmithing skills from his father and put them to good use.

He obtained work with Laird's shipbuilders and in 1840, whilst employed as a blacksmith, he married Elizabeth Ellis at St Philip's church, Liverpool on the 16th November. [2] [3]

They were resident on Leveson Street, Liverpool when the first of his many children, Mary Jane, was born but a few months later, when the 1841 census was taken, they were living on Blundell Street. [4]

He moved the family to Birkenhead not long afterwards. His son William was born at Brickfield Cottages, Birkenhead in January 1843 and subsequently christened later that year in Liverpool. [5]

Their next 3 children died in infancy, Robert Frederick 14 months, John Jackson 15 months and Elizabeth 21 months. They moved house quite a few times during those years and in March 1851 lived at Back Beckwith Street, Birkenhead [6] yet not 2 months later when baby Elizabeth died, they lived on Cleveland Street.

There was not much time for grief though as Catherine arrived that year followed by Ellen in 1852 and another Elizabeth in 1854. Of those 3 daughters only Catherine survived and was joined by Griffith in 1857.

It is shortly after this that what remains of the family moves back across the river to Toxteth Park, Liverpool. In 1861 they lodged at Beresford Road, Toxteth Park. [7]

Robert's wife Elizabeth died there in July 1865 (unclear if a sudden event or gradual) but a coroner's inquest ruled that it was due to excessive drinking. (Maybe the toll of losing so many of her children had an effect).

Robert married again on the 2nd April 1866 at St Bride's church, Liverpool, to Elizabeth Maddocks [8] [9] and before long the couple moved into Baffin Street, Liverpool where they would remain for 10 years. He had almost as many children (but not quite) with the second Elizabeth as the first, the main difference being is that his second family all survived. His circumstances had improved and he was then a foreman working for T.B Royden & Sons and would ultimately become a manager for them.

In 1871 only his eldest child from the 2nd marriage was with them, the older children had either married, moved away, or died. [10]

They moved before 1881 onto Arnold Street in Toxteth Park [11] by which time they had had 6 children [12] and a seventh, and last, Gertrude Amelia arrived in 1882. His entire 2nd family are listed in the 1891 census at Arnold Street. [13]

He remained at Arnold Street until his death there on the 10th May 1899 aged 79 years. [14] [15]

He was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery on the 13th May 1899. [16] [17]
