William Barker (1788-1862) was born in Satterthwaite (in Hawkshead parish), Lancashire on the 30th June 1788 and christened in Satterthwaite on the 22nd July 1788. He was the son of a collier, Robert Barker and Margaret Woodend.
[1]
He became a forgeman and lived in Spark Bridge (in Ulverston parish). He married Jane Jackson (sometimes known as Jenny) in Ulverston parish on the 31st May 1807.
[2][3]
Jane was already expecting their first child and a little over 3 months later Joseph was born.
[4]
Their next child, a daughter, Jane, like the rest of the children following, were christened in the chapelry of Egton cum Newland (otherwise known as Penny Bridge chapel (part of Ulverston parish). Surprisingly for that era, all bar one of the 11 children survived and went onto marry. Their youngest child, Thomas born in 1828 died aged 1 year old.
Spark Bridge was a very small community and as the children grew, opportunities were limited locally and many of them travelled south to Liverpool.
By 1841 just William & Jane were left at home. William was employed by then as a basket filler and they had moved to Backbarrow in neighbouring Colton parish.
[5]
Jane died in Backbarrow in 1848 and William then travelled south and went to live with his eldest daughter Jane in Park Road, Toxteth Park.
[6][7]
William died of "old age & dropsy" on the 10th May 1862 at Park Road
