Biography

NATHAN BARKER, b. at Andover, about 1715 son of John Barker and Sarah Chadwick;[1] d. at Andover, 28 Mar 1789; m. at Newbury (intention),13 May 1742, MARY MERRILL, b. at Newbury, 9 May 1721 daughter of David and Mary (Morse) Merrill;[2] perhaps the widow Mary Barker who d. at Boxford, 29 Jul 1794 at age 73.

On 11 July 1778 (recorded 14 March 1785), Nathan Barker for various causes but primarily for the good will and affection for his son conveyed to his son Moses, physician of Dedham, a tract of land in Andover with buildings containing about 39 ½ acres. On 20 September 1785 (recorded 20 September 1785), Nathan Barker conveyed to Mary Barker single woman of Andover four land parcels with buildings for payment of £50. The acreage of the four parcels was 71 acres.[3]

Nathan Barker, yeoman, did not leave a will and his estate entered probate 3 August 1789 with son Moses Barker as administrator at the request of widow Mary. Real estate was £250. Debts of the estate were £415.6.2 the largest amount of that £235.6.11 owed to Moses Barker.[4] On 2 December 1790, Moses Barker, then of Milton, acting as estate administrator made a series of transactions with Putnam Ingalls to settle the debts of the estate. Part of this involved the reversion of the dower property of widow Mary Barker.[5]

Nathan and Mary were parents of three children born at Andover.

i NATHAN BARKER, b. 22 Sep 1743; d. 21 Oct 1743.

ii MOSES BARKER, b. 22 May 1745; d. at Boston, 7 Jan 1821; m. at Stoughton, 23 Nov 1776, RUTH CRANE, b. at Stoughton, 25 Feb 1757 daughter of Thomas and Mary (Fenno) Crane;[6] Ruth d. at Boston, 21 Sep 1842.

iii MARY BARKER, b. 17 Mar 1754; Mary was unmarried in 1785. In the 1790 census, Mary Barker is head of household in Andover with a household of two females and one other person. This census record might represent Mary’s mother Mary.[7]
