Biography

Anthan Allen Barker was born on June 19 1893 in Milltown, Chambers, Alabama, United States. He was the son of Moses Barker and Ida Fant Barker.[1]

In the 1900 U. S. Census (9 June 1900) the family was living in Milltown. M. A. Barker (Moses) was forty-six years old and farming on a rented farm. Moses and Ida had four sons: James Otis (Ota), William (Willie), Allen, and King. Allen was seven years old.[2]

Allen attended school through completion of the eighth grade and could read and write.[3]

Allen's father died on December 2, 1909 when Allen would have been about sixteen years old.[4]

In the 1910 U. S. Census (27 April 1910) Willie was listed as the head of the household that included his new wife of six months, Lonie. Allen, age 16, and King, age 14 and their mother were also in the household. They lived in Milltown on a rented farm which was likely the same place that they lived in the prior census. Everyone in the household were listed as farm laborers. Ida's brother and his family were living next door.[5]

On July 27, 1913 Allen married Mollie Allen in Chambers County, Alabama. Mollie was most often used for the Mary Allen.[6]

On June 5, 1917 Allen Barker registered for the World War I Draft in Chambers County, Alabama. His name was given as Anthan Allen Barker, but he signed it Antan Allen Barker. He gave his address as Route 3, Wadley Alabama, United States. He listed himself as a self-employed farmer. He claimed exemption from service due to having a wife and his mother as dependents.[7]

On July 24, 1918 he enlisted in the army and served until June 24, 1919.[8]

In the 1920 U.S. Census (3 January 1920) Allen and Mollie lived in the same dwelling as Ida and King Barker but were listed as separate families. They were enumerated on Fant Ferry and Wadley Road. King was likely working as a farm laborer on the family farm and Allen was farming on his own account on a rented farm which may have been part of the family farm or land rented nearby.[9]

In the 1930 U. S. Census (3 April 1930) the family lived on Abanda Road in Milltown. Allen was still farming. They had three children between age nine and one.[10] They lived next to Mollie's mother and brother. Mollie's mother, Mary Bishop Allen age seventy-four, and Mary's brother, Benjamin Allen age forty-six, were both listed as farmers.[11] Mary Allen owned her farm and Allen Barker was renting so it is likely both were farming land owned by Mary.[12]

In the 1940 U. S. Census (12 April 1940) Allen was listed as Anthony and owned the farm he was farming. Mollie was forty-one. All three children were living at home. In this record "Melvin" is listed twice, but the first is actually Catherine age nineteen. They still lived next to the Allen family farm. Mollie's mother had died but her brother Oliver's family lived there along with Ben.[3]

Mollie became ill as early as September of 1945.[13] She died on January 15, 1946.[14]

Allen died on April 13, 1984. At that time he was living in Lanett, Chambers County, Alabama, United States.[15] He was buried at the Allen Cemetery in Milltown, Chambers, Alabama, United States where Mollie had been buried.[1]

Research Notes

Allen's First Name

His first name in the Social Security index, military record and 1940 Census is Anthony. It seems likely to me that is probably the correct meaning of "Anthon, Anton" from the draft registration and Find A Grave. (Cushing-1054 21:27, 12 April 2021 (UTC))
