Amelia Barker was born in 1848 in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, England to James Barker and Susan (Whiting) Barker. Her birth was registered in Maldon, Essex in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Whiting.^[1]

In 1851 Amelia Barker (age 3, Scholar) lived in Burnham with her father James (48, Ag Lab), mother Susan (38, Ag Lab Wife), and six siblings: James (17, Ag Lab), Susan (16, Servant), George (13, Scholar), Joseph (10, Scholar), John (7, Scholar), and Hannah (0), as well as lodger William Cook (28, Ag Lab) and cousin John Bearman (11, Ag Lab).^[2]
