John was born about 1813 in Deptford, Kent, the son of John Theodore Barker (~1770 - ) and Rebecca.

John was born on 26 April 1813 and baptised on 14 July 1814 in High Street-Formerly Butt Lane-Independent, Deptford, Kent, England.[1]
He trained for the ministry at Highbury College (1831-1834)
The third in his family of that name.[2]
John was included in the Dissenting Academy at Homerton list, published in 1812, of annual subscribers, and was shown as Rev. J. T. Barker, Deptford, a member of the Society.
In the 1851 census John (age 37) was in Louth, Lincolnshire, England.[3]
