Biography

Mary Barker (1811-1884) was born in Spark Bridge on the 4th April 1811. She was the daughter of a forgeman, William Barker and Jane Jackson and was christened at the nearby Penny Bridge Chapel (Egton cum Newland) on the 15th April 1811. [1]

She married John Wilson in Ulverston on the 19th September 1835, [2]

They initially lived briefly in Preston where their daughter Mary was born in mid 1837 and christened there. At that time John was working as a mechanic. [3]

The young family emigrated to Australia leaving Liverpool on the 7th January 1840 aboard the "Thomas Lowry" or Lourie arriving 16th May 1840 in New South Wales. John was described as a carpenter and Mary a dressmaker. Young Mary's birthplace was given as Spark Bridge on the passenger list (possibly an error). [4] A year later their son William is born in Sydney on the 20th July 1841 and christened at St Philip's church there in September 1841. [5] (there may also have been a daughter Jane b 1840 just after their arrival but cannot confirm)

Something happened to cause the family to return to England within the next 8 years (with or without John). Certainly Mary was widowed and living in Backbarrow when she remarried a widowed labourer, William Taylor Bevins in Colton parish church on the 24th September 1849. [6] They were still living in Backbarrow in 1851 when her 2 children and his 2 children formed their blended family (although all were shown as Bevins) and William was now working as a forgeman. [7]

Their respective children gre and moved on. By 1861 the couple were living alone in Wood Cottages in Colton and William was now employed as a keeper for the River Leven fishery. [8] William was kept very busy stopping poachers or people breaching the new salmon fisheries act and was often before the magistrates as witness. They remained in same place for over a decade. [9] By 1881 the couple had moved into Water Close, Backbarrow. William was still working and they had a grandaughter staying with them. [10]

She died on the 12th February 1884 at Waterside Cottage in Backbarrow. [11] [12]
