Biography

Hilda (Barker) Harvey migrated from England to New Zealand.

Hilda Beatrice Barker (1899-1965) was born at Rosslyn Street, Toxteth Park in late 1899. She was the daughter of an engineer, Robert Barker and Susannah Hughes. ^[1] She was christened on the 15th April 1900 at St Michael's church, Toxteth Park. ^[2]

The family still lived in Rosslyn Street in 1901 (but her sisters were staying elsewhere at an aunt's house) leaving just her and her brother with her parent's and another aunt. ^[3]

By 1911 the family had moved across to Birkenhead, Cheshire and were at Clifton Crescent there. ^[4]

Her only surviving brother, who had been in an institution for some years, died in 1920 and that may have been the trigger for the family to move on.
Her sister Roberta emigrated to New Zealand immediately after marrying in 1923, their parents went in 1924 & their other sister in 1928. Hilda was possibly either already there or travelled soon after as she married in 1924 to William Rivers Harvey. ^[5]

Hilda Initially lived on Renall Street in Masterton, her husband had obtained work as a linesman there ^[6] but moved to Mount Bruce Road, Masterton before 1928. ^[7]

After staying there a few years they moved on to Makara Road, Stanway near Halcombe before 1938. Her husband was working there as a farm hand which he did for at least 8 years. ^[8]

After the war, toward the end of the 1940's they moved to an even more remote property at Rocky Bay near Auckland where once gain they farmed. They stayed there for almost a decade. ^[9]

After her husband retired they moved to Matipo street, Eastbourne, Lower Hutt before 1963. ^[10]

Hilda died in the Wellington region New Zealand in 1965. ^[11]
