Biography

Zebediah Barker[1] was born 8 Jan 1719/20 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts and died in 1780.

He married Phebe Merrill 15 Dec 1743.

He married Deborah Merrill 8 Mar 1749/50.

Probate and Property

In his will written 17 May 1780 (probate 5 June 1781), Zebadiah Barker bequeathed to beloved wife Deborah the use of one-half of the dwelling house, all the household goods, and maintenance from the estate. Son Daniel Barker receives five pounds. Daughter Phebe Austin receives ten pounds. Sons Zebadiah and Isaac each receives three pounds. Daughter Deborah Dow receives four pounds and son Peter Barker receives six pounds. Son Abijah receives all the estate, real and personal, not otherwise disposed of. Daughter Zilpah Barker receives four pounds. Son Nathan Barker receives the gun and ten pounds. Daughter Hepzabath Barker receives four pounds when she reaches age eighteen or on her marriage day. Sons Levi and Silas each receives three pounds when they reach age twenty-one. Sons Nathan, Levi, and Silas should be put out to a trade or otherwise as might be best and they should receive the profits of their earnings. Son Abijah and wife Deborah were named executors. The homestead property with buildings was valued at £45 and a tract of 23 acres was valued at £66.13.4. Total estate value was £137.2.8.[2]

There were judgments made for debts of the estate and these were settled in a series of land transactions. On 10 September 1788, Deborah Barker widow and Abijah Barker yeoman were of Methuen when property was sold to settle to claim of David Whittier for £21.0.10. On 28 August 1794, a sale was made to settle the claim of Aaron Noyes for £15.1.6 with Deborah Barker named as the will executrix. On 30 September 1796, a judgment was made against John Plummer and his wife Deborah Plummer of Hampstead, New Hampshire administratrix of the estate in the amount of $15.50 to Samuel White. On 22 December 1798, property was sold to settle a total claim of $31.53 by Benjamin Stevens, Jr. against the estate with Deborah Plumer wife of John Plumer of Hampstead as executrix of the will.[3]
