Research Notes

"The old garrison, homestead of the Barker family in Pembroke, was probably the first site to be occupied by an English colonist within the limits of what is now Pembroke and Hanson." [page 19] Ancient landmarks of Pembroke

"To this rude pioneer's dwelling Robert Barker brought home his young wife, Lucy Williams ; and here their children—Robert, Francis, Isaac, Abigail, and Rebecca—were born. In 1651, Myles Standish sold a lot of thirty-five acres at Namassakcesett to Robert Barker ; and a year or two later, the Town of Duxbury assigned him lands. A farm was cleared, and on its produce, eked out with fish from the herring brook near by, the family lived and throve."
