It is said that Matthew was born in 1576, but there are few if any available sources. One thing we do know - at least two of Matthew's children were part of the company led by Rev. Ezekial Rogers from Yorkshire to ultimately Rowley, Massachusestts. Both Thomas Barker and Jane (Barker) Lambert were on Rev. Rogers flagship "John of London"[1] Some say that James Barker, also of Rowley, was a sibling of Thomas and Jane, but others have a different father for James.

So close was the Barker family with Rev. Rogers, that when Matthew's son Thomas died, his widow became the third wife of Rev. Rogers himself[2]
