Edith Anna Barker was born in Smyrna (Izmir), Turkey on 8th August 1840 to Samuel Barker and Marianne Francoise née La Fontaine.
Edith married James William Whittall (known as William Whittall) in 1862 and had 12 children. They lived in Moda, Constantinople (Istanbul) Turkey where William established a company, J W Whittall and Co in 1873 after returning from England where he had worked for a Whittall family business, J Hartner & Co.
William was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1898, becoming Sir J.William Whittall, and Edith became Lady Edith Whittall. She passed away in Istanbul in 1935, aged 95.
