Biography

  • Ruth Barker was born on the 1st of April 1797 to Abner Barker and Lydia Osborn in Randolph Township, Randolph County, North Carolina. [1]
  • The 1800 U. S. census finds Ruth's family living in Randolph Township, Randolph County, North Carolina.[2] In addition to her parents she has two sisters and a brother.
  • In winter of 1804/1805 Ruth moved with her family from Randolph County, North Carolina to Marlboro County, South Carolina.[3]
    • On the 24th of November 1804 Abner Barker requested, in the men's meeting, a certificate from Back Creek Monthly Meeting (Randolph, North Carolina) to Piney Grove Monthly Meeting (Marlboro County, South Carolina) for himself and his three sons (Nathan, Nicholas and Allen).[4] His wife, Lydia, made a similar request in the women's meeting for herself and her four daughters (Mary, Hannah, Ruth and Phebe).[5]
    • On the 29th of December 1804 the monthly meeting was not held due to small turn out as a consequence of the extreme weather. The only business discussed was Lydia Barker's request for a certificate. The friends appointed to produce the certificate report that their work is not complete and the matter is referred to the next monthly meeting.[6][7]
    • On the 12th of January 1805 the men's meeting met to take up the business missed in the December meeting. The men's meeting found that Abner's affair were not satisfactorily concluded and that consequently they could not produce a certificate.[8]
    • On the 26th of January 1805 the women's meeting produced a certificate for Lydia and her daughters.[9]
    • On the 28th of September 1805 Abner's request for a certificate was revisited and it as found that the issue was not sufficient to detain his certificate.[10]
    • On the 16th of November 1805 Abner Barker and his son's (Nathan, Nicholas, and Allen) were received by certificate from Back Creek Monthly Meeting (Randolph, North Carolina) to Piney Grove Monthly Meeting (Marlboro County, South Carolina).[11]
  • The 1810 U. S. census finds Ruth's family living in Marlboro County, South Carolina.[12] In addition to her parents she has four brothers and three sisters. See Research Note 4
  • In 1813, at the age of 16, Ruth moved with her parents from Marlboro County, South Carolina back to Randolph County, North Carolina.[3]
    • On the 20th of November 1813 Abner requested a certificate for himself and his family from the Piney Grove Monthly Meeting (Marlboro County, South Carolina) to the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting (Alamance, North Carolina)[13]
    • On the 18th of December 1813 the certificate, which Abner had requested for himself and his family, was produced and signed.[14]
    • On the 4th of June 1814 Abner presented his certificate from Piney Grove Monthly Meeting, it was accepted and he and his sons were received into membership at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. Lydia presented her certificate in the women's meeting, it was accepted and she and her daughters (Mary, Hannah, Ruth, and Phebe) were received into the Society.[15][16]
  • On the 4th of January 1821 Ruth married Benjamin Davis in Randolph County, North Carolina.[17][18][19]
    • On the 18th of November Benjamin Davis and Ruth Barker appeared before the Holly Springs Monthly Meeting and declared their intention of marriage.[20][21]
    • On the 16th of December 1820 Benjamin Davis and Ruth Barker appear for a second time. As nothing has been found to impede their marriage they are given leave to marry.[22][23]
    • On the 20 Jan 1821 it is reported that Benjamin and Ruth's marriage was accomplish in proper Quaker manner.[24][25]
  • Ruth died on 20 Aug 1890 aged 92.
