Marjorie Barker, born 3 January 1920, was the fourth child of Adolphus M. Barker and Lois Link Barker. One of her siblings, William Link Barker, died when she was 8 months old and her father died in November 1922. Her youngest sister was born in May 1923.
The family lived in Lyerly, Chattooga County, Georgia, but spent a great deal of time at the family farm on Kincaid Mountain in nearby Holland, Georgia. While the farm belonged to her grandparents, her father spent a lot of time helping work the farm.
In November 1922, both her father and grandfather died within a week of each other. The family remained in Georgia until Marjorie's grandmother, Linia Blake Barker, passed away in August 1924. Lois then moved the family to Ashland City, Cheatham County, Tennessee, to be closer to her family.
