FAG quotes an unattributed birthday celebration article dated 29 Aug 1921:
"Mrs. Maryette Cushman was born at Depauville, Jefferson county, on August 21st, 1825, daughter of Polly Read and Truman Barker. She removed to Oswego with her parents when only two years old, and with few interruptions has lived here ever since. There were twelve children in her father's family, of which she is the only survivor. When twenty years old she married Jerome B. Cushman and when forty years old her husband died, leaving her with seven children. The oldest son died soon after the father. She heroically took up the work of caring for the family, four of whom are still living. When she came here with her parents the city was only a hamlet, much of it covered by primeval forest, she has seen the forest cleared, the city grow during her life has seen great inventions and great reforms inaugurated. Her life has been lived In an age on ages telling. She was living in the Home for the Homeless."
