Biography

AMY was born about 1837 in Georgia to ABRAM BARKER and ISABELLA Unknown. By 1860, the Barker’s settled in Rankin County, Mississippi at the edge of Barker’s Prairie on what became known as Barker Road in 1907. It was one of the county’s earliest “thoroughfares, a beaten path running by everyone’s door & served as a road.” The road got its name from a family named Barker, who lived on the north end on Barkers Prairie. Barker road is about one mile west of the Rankin-Scott line, parallel to the line and running north and south. The BARKER, HARRELL, and McPHERSON families lived on this road among other families. ^[1]

She married JOHN B DAVIS in 1853.^[2] The 1860 Census recorded three children,

• ISABEL age 6,
• J. B. age 4,
• M. A. age 1.^[3]

On 30 January 1860, ABRAM BARKER and ISABELLA BARKER sold 80 acres to AMY DAVIS for $300.00 described as 1/2 of lot No. one, Section 1, Township 6, Range 5 East.^[4]

JOHN died 26 June 1863 while serving in the 39th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers. AMY married R. C. COPELAND on 16 Nov 1864 in Rankin County.^[5]

Her daughter, ISABELLA DAVIS, age 16 was in the household of ABRAM BARKER IN 1870.^[6] In 1880, a daughter AMY COPELAND, age 14 was enumerated as a cousin in the household of JAMES and M J POPE.^[7]
