Elizabeth Barkley Carnes was born 19 December 1830 in New Hope, Brown County, Ohio, the daughter of Hugh Barkley and Keziah Donham.
She married Arthur Lewis Carnes (1799-1884) as his second wife, 29 May 1851 in Clermont Co, Ohio. Nancy Slater was his first wife. He brought along his children Patience, Elizabeth, OK, Jesse into the marriage. They had the following children:

Arthur Lewis (1856-1928) m. Florence Donaldson
Sena Almira (1858- ) m. Nicolas Dixon
Dora Belle (1861-1930) m. David Shelton
John Wilson Barkley (1864-1947) m. Julia Viola Bettle
Emma M. (1868-1944) unmarried
She died 1 February 1903, in Clermont County, Ohio and is buried in Laurel Cemetery.
