Research Notes

It should be noted that there is a second John Gilbert (most likely a cousin) located in Wilkinson County, Mississippi (Natchez) who was an attorney that later would be killed in a duel.

There is some debate among Gilbert researchers about these two John Gilberts'. In Hancock County, Georgia there are several Gilbert Families that John W Gilbert could be a member of. There is however no doubt about the marriage of John and Mourning nor whose daughter Mourning is.

It is quite possible that John and Mourning could be cousins.
