William James Barlow (son of Richard Barlow and Stazliagh Mary Bartlett) was born 18 Jul 1832 in Chelsea Land, christened December 18 1836 in St Philips, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia[1] and died 11 Sep 1886 in Melbourne, Australia. He married Christina Caroline Stivey on 22 Nov 1862 in Port Melbourne, daughter of James Rabetts Stivey and Caroline Rowett.
William James was one of the children of Richard Barlow and Siazliagh Mary Bartlett who arrived on the "Indiana" in Sydney in October 1833. Richard (who was a bellhanger, whitesmith, blacksmith, etc) had been an "armourer" on Captain Perry's ill-fated expedition to find the Northwest Passage in the 1820s. He seems to have died (in Sydney?) in 1836 (no death cert found) and Siazliagh remarried a Mr Edwards c 1838 (but no further children). She later lived with her Australian-born daughter, Maria Jane Carse, and is buried at Sunbury, having lived to 99.
William James had various occupations in Sandridge (note Barlow Street off Nott Street) and eventually formed Barlow & Sons Mantle-piece Manufacturers. Their house was in Nott Street and the factory was behind it fronting Station Street (all now gone) and they had a showroom in City Road. However the business folded in the mid 1880s - perhaps coinciding with William James' death from Bright's disease.[2]
