Charles Barlow was born about 1813 in England and baptised at the Parish of St. Michael in Thorn, Norfolk on 13 June 1813.
On 15 October 1833 Norwich Quarter Sessions he was sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing a ring. He had previously been convicted in The Lent Assizes on 25 March 1833 and charged but found not guilty in the Summer Assizes 1833 for larceny. His name did not appear in the papers probably due to the fact that his uncle, Wm Stark was a Grand Juror.
Charles was transferred from Norwich to the hulk “Justinia” at Woolwich and transported to Australia on 18 June 1834. His occupation was listed as silk weaver, 21 years of age, Protestant, able to read but not write, previous conviction, 5ft3 1/2 in tall, brown hair, hazel eyes, ruddy complexion with scars on his left wrist and centre of his forehead.
He was transported to NSW on the ship 'Henry Tanner', departing England on 27 June 1834.
In NSW, Charles married Amelia Sherringham on 13 Aug 1838 at Bathurst, New South Wales[2].
Together Charles and Amelia had children:
Charles (1842),
Harriet Elizabeth (1844),
James (1845),
Samuel (1848),
Selina (1849),
George (1851),
Martha (1853),
William (1858) #Mary (1863).
The children were baptised in the Windsor and Penrith areas, west of Sydney. Charles ultimately settled on a farm in Castlereagh.[3]
Amelia passed away in October 1896, after which Charles retired from his farm known as "Russell's Farm" at Castlereagh and went to reside with his daughter at St Marys.
He passed away on 21 September 1901 at Penrith. He was 95.[4]
Research Notes
The death registration gives the father's name as Charles rather than Samuel but this could be an error on the part of the informant.
