Biography

Alexander Barlow served as MP for Wigan, Lancs.[1]

He was born about 1512 [est: was an MP in 1533 so would have had to be 21?]; he was a minor in 1525 under the guardianship of his mother, Anne, daughter of Otis Reddish.[1]

Alexander was the son of Ellis Barlow and Anne Reddish.[2] He succeeded his father to the Barlow estate in Lancashire.[2]

His sister Margaret was the wife of Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby.[1]

Marriage and Children

Alexander married Elizabeth Legh or Leigh. She was the daughter and coheir of George Legh of Manchester.[1] On 24 September, 1528, Anne Barlawe, widow of Elys Barlawe, and John Redyche, esq, made an indented agreement with George Leghe of Manchester, gentleman, respecting the marriage of Alexander Barlawe, son and heir of Elys and Anne, and Elizabeth Leghe, a daughter of George, with a bond for performance of the agreement.[3]

They had one son and 5 daughters.[1]

Occupation

Alexander was a sitting member of parliament for Wigan in 1547, March 1533, October 1553, April 1554, November 1554, and 1555.[1] He was an overseer of the will of his uncle, John Reddish, in 1569, and was the executor of the will of his brother-in-law, Edward Stanley in 1572.[1]

Events

Alexander conveyed his estates in trust to his son-in-law, Edward Scarisbrick and five others in 1579.[1]

His wife Elizabeth died on 26 December, 1583, and was interred at Didsbury Chapel, Manchester, Lancashire.[8]

Alexander was arrested and imprisoned for his adhesion to the Roman Catholic faith.

Death

Alexander Barlow, Esq, died in Manchester in 24 August 1584[9] and was on 26 August interred at Didsbury Chapel with his wife Elizabeth.[8]
