Biography

European Aristocracy
Frances Barlow was a member of the aristocracy in England.

Frances (Barlow) Matthew formerly Parker (1550/51–1629), benefactor, was the fourth daughter of William Barlow (d. 1568), at that time bishop of Bath and Wells, and Agatha Wellesbourne, a former nun; William Barlow (1544–1625) was her brother, and the merchant and explorer, Roger Barlow, her uncle. She m. (1) on 29 December 1569, at the age of eighteen, Matthew Parker (1551–1574), the second son of Archbishop Matthew Parker and (2) in 1577 Tobie Matthew (1544?–1628).

After her mother Agatha's 's death in 1595, Frances arranged for a large memorial plaque to be placed above Agatha's tomb in St. Mary's Church in Winchester, co. Hampshire, identifying Agatha as the daughter of Humphrey Wellesbourne.[1]

Death

"'Mres Mathew, widdow... late wife to Tobie, Lord Archbishop of York' died in the Parish of St. Martin's, Coney Street, York on 8 May and was buried on 9 May, 1629. Reg. of S. Martin's, p. 93."[2]

Will

By her last will, made August Qth, 1628, and proved May 15th, 1629, Mrs. Matthew gave to Peter House in Cambridge, " where her beloved Son Samuel was a scholar, and died there, Two hundred pounds to be employed for the Behoofe of two poor Scholars, for ever." Of another legacy of hers, which concerns the subject of this biography, Mr. Wilson writes : " To her son Sir Toby, she gave a ring set with Eleven Diamonds, given her by King Charles the First, and intended him to have his Father's Library, had his Father not disinherited him So she gave the Books and manuscripts to York Minster..."[3]

  2. John Matthew of Oxon, b c. 1580, Christ Church matric. 30 Mar 1599, aged 19, "brother of Toby 1590 and of Samuel 1581" (p 988).[4]
  3. Samuel, b. Feb. 1583, d. 1601 at Cambridge and buried in the church of St Mary Minor.
  4. 2 children d. as infants[5]
