Biography
Brabazon Barlow R.N. was born in Ireland.
Brabazon John Barlow was born on 24 March 1833 and was baptised on 2 June 1833 at Eglish Parish, Armagh, Ireland[1]. His father, Reverend William Barlow was aged 41 and his mother, Catherine Disney, was 27 years of age.
His mother died on 3 November 1853.
On 19 June 1856 he was issued with his Certificate of Competency as a Second Mate in the Merchant Navy. He went on to become Captain of the screw steamer Taimir and the Shaw Saville New Zealand Shipping Company
At the age of 33 he married 26 year old Harriette Ellen Guinness (the daughter of Reverend William Newton Guinness and Harriette Le Poer Trench) on 5 June 1866 at St. Luke's, St. Helier's, Jersey, Channel Islands. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 26 of the Home News for India, China and the Colonies dated 11 June 1866:
MARRIAGES.
BARLOW-GUINNESS - June 5, at St. Luke's, St. Helier's, Jersey, Brabazon John, son of the Rev. W. Barlow, rector of Creggan, county Armagh, Ireland, to Harriette Ellen, daughter of the Rev. W. N. Guinness, rector of South Yarra, Melbourne, Australia.[2]
They had four children during their marriage, their first child Theodora being born in New Zealand.
Also in the household was a Nurse and three servants in 1891.
Brabazon John Barlow died on 13 March 1900 in 16 Victoria Park, Dover, Kent, England, at the age of 67[5]. He was buried at St James Cemetery, Dover, Dover District, Kent, England[6]. The following notice was printed on page 5 of the Dover Express dated 16 March 1900:
DEATH OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF PILOTS
We regret to have to record the death of Captain Brabazon John Barlow, the Superintendent of Trinity pilots at this port. He died at his residence, 16, Victoria Park, on Tuesday afternoon after a very short illness, of pneumonia. He was in London last week at the Admiralty Court in connection with the action re the steamer Lisa, but was obliged to return before the trial was finished. Reaching home on Friday evening he was laid aside, and did not leave his house again.
Captain Barlow prior to his appointment at Dover, when he succeeded Captain Cow about ten years ago, had been in the merchant service, and was formerly Captain of the screw steamer Taimir and the Shaw Saville New Zealand Shipping Company. On his coming to Dover he interested himself in introducing steam pilot cutters instead of the old sailing vessels, Dover being the first Pilot Station in England to adopt steamers. He also, otherwise, very much improved the service during his ten years tenure of office, and he was much respected by the fellowship in general.
The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, and all pilots not on duty will follow him to the grave.[7]
His Will was proved on 20 April 1900 at London to his widow Harriett Ellen Barlow[8]. Effects: £3177 7s. 6d. Resworn November 1900 £3258 12s. 6d.
