William was born in 1848 in Watauga, NC. He was the son of John Barlow and Matilda Kilby. It is believed William enlisted with the 17th Regiment of the NC Infantry Unit, however, additional research is needed. Upon the end of the war he returned home and in 1873 he married Sarah Caroline Sturgill (1852-1910; d/o William M Sturgill and Sarah Jane Osborne). They settled in Ashe County, NC where they had 3 children. Sarah died in 1910 and William married his 2nd wife, Dora E Combs (1869-1927; d/o John Pinkney Combs and Mary Amanda McBride), on 26 Mar 1911. They had no known children. William and Dora lived in Ashe for the remainder of their lives. She passed away in Jun 1928 and he on 15 Dec 1928. He is buried in the Potter Family Cemetery in NC.
