Biography

Charles was born in 1881 in Swan, Western Australia, the eldest son of John Barlow and Bridget, nee Ryan.

It appears he was prospecting and gold mining near Kalgoorlie, W.A. in 1910[1] and in 1913 was a member of the Catholic Young Men's Society at Boulder, W.A.[2]

He married Eva Smith in Boulder, W.A. in 1914.

Charles was a labourer and his writing shows limited literacy, with shaky lettering and poor spelling.

He applied to become an Australian War Worker to work in the UK as a labourer or navvy under a joint Australian government/ British government scheme. At the time he was married and lived in Perth. He was accepted and entered into an agreement with the Commonwealth on 23 Apr 1917. He was issued with Australian War Worker Badge No. 469 on 19 May 1917 and departed for England on the SS "Clan McGillivray" from Fremantle, W.A. on 23 May 1917, disembarking at Plymouth, England on 27 Jul 1917.

On 01 Aug 1917 he commenced work with W. Jessop & Sons, Ltd as a labourer in the Billet Department. Within 2 months he had presented a medical certificate stating he was suffering from heart disease and the effects of the climate. The medical examiner for the AIF confirmed he was suffering from heart disease and was not fit for heavy work. It also confirmed that he had suffered from the condition for years.

In Oct 1917 Charles requested a transfer to Liverpool as he had relatives there.

Charles was approved for repatriation to Australia but on 30 Jan 1918 he presented at Australia House on the Strand, London with a certificate to inform them that he'd been picked up on the street the previous day where he'd collapsed with a heart attack and had been taken to St. Thomas' Hospital. He collapsed while at Australia House and died there shortly after, despite first aid attempts by staff and fellow War Workers. Following an inquest he was buried at Fulham New Cemetery, London on 06 Feb 1918.

His brother and sister-in-law were in London a few weeks later and collected some of his effects.

His effects were forwarded to his widow, but the ship they were despatched on, the "Boorora" was torpedoed.
