This information is summarized from Edwin's entry in the 1905 edition of the "Cyclopedia of NZ, Otago & Southland Provincial Districts". He was born in 1853 in Hampshire, England. In 1871 he married Sarah Eliza Whellar, daughter of Mr. Charles Whellar, of London. The young couple, with their first child, emigrated to NZ aboard the clipper ship 'Zealandia' landing at Bluff NZ on 28 December 1872. He was employed in the grocery and merchandising industry for 17 years and eventually set up business for himself around 1900, initially as a grocer and later as a tobacconist. He was active in the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle Lodge of Oddfellows, having passed all the chairs of this institution. Edwin and Sarah also managed to produce about 14 children. Two of their sons were killed in action during WWI. Edwin died in 1926 and is buried in Invercargill's Eastern cemetery.
