Biography

Canfield Barlow was born in 1843 in Manhattan p, New York, the son of Edward Barlow and Adalia Canfield. Before 1888, Canfield married Ida Almeda Chittenden (1862-1935). They had three children: Canfield C., 1888; SarahnIda, 1890; and Gerald Edward, 1894. Canfield (Sr.) died in 1895 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. [1]

During the Civil War, Canfield T. Barlow enlisted as a Private for three months’ service in May 1862 with Company D, 37th Regiment, New York Militia. [5] [6] [7]

Barlow’s regiment was “Organized for three months' service May 29, 1862. Left State for Middle Department May 29, and duty there till September. Mustered out September 2, 1862.” [8]

Canfield Barlow married Emma J. Fowler, 27, on 13 October 1879 in Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey.

In 1880, they lived at 320 Bleecker Street, New York City, New York. The household included Canfield Barlow, 37, a medical doctor, born in New York (parents b. Canada); and his wife, Emma, 31, born in New York, as were her parents. [10]

The Barlow home at 320 Bleecker Street, New York City, no longer stands. In 1901, a “new” building was erected on that site. The property today is a four storey retail and residential brick building, located near the corner of Grove Street in the Greenwich Village district. A one bedroom condo there has an estimated value of $1.9 million (Jan. 2022). (data per Zillow, Trulia, and StreeEasy real estate websites)

Canfield Barlow married Ida Almeda Chittenden (1862 Wisconsin - 1935 Illinois), sometime before 1888, when their first child was born. Their first two children were born in Chicago, Illinois, and third was born in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
