James Barnard is the son of Geoffrey Barnard. He married Lady Emma Lavinia Guinness, daughter of Arthur Francis Benjamin Guinness, 3rd Earl of Iveagh and Miranda Daphne Jane Smiley, on 4 December 1995. He was a practising barrister.
