The schooner H. & R. Atwood was lost with all hands en route from Cape Breton. A Barnstable Patriot "Review of Business for Wellfleet in 1863" published 12 Jan 1864, has: "The year that has passed has been a prosperous one. Though the favor of a kind Providence, our vessels, with their precious freightage of the strength and pride of our town have been wafted safely from port to port, with but one sad exception, which I cannot leave without a word. Capt. John S. P. Barnard, a man true and honorable, of unconquerable energy, courage and perseverance, who had been in many extreme perils, sailed master of the fine and able schr. H. & R. Atwood, from Boston for the south last summer, and has never been heard from. He leaves a wife and several children, but they are not his only mourners--everyone who knew him has a tear for his memory."
The death records of John Barnard and Henry Jones are undated, and follow the last dated entries of 1863. Neither record has age, birthplace or parents. (Nye (1920) has the ship lost in 1864.)
