Biography

Margaret was born on the 11th May 1830 the daughter of John Barnard and Margaret (Faraday) Barnard.

1841 Census on the 6th June 1841 Margaret was living in Cross Street, Islington, Middlesex with her parents John and Margaret, and her siblings Anna, Frank, Jane, Mary, John, James and Charlotte.^[1][2]

On 23rd February 1844 Margaret Barnard, Jane Barnard, John Barnard, Mary Barnard, James Barnard and Charlotte Barnard were all baptised at the Sandemanian Church in Islington, by their mother Margaret Faraday who had become a church member the week before. ^[3].

1861 Census on the 7th April 1861 Margaret was living at 12 Compton Terrace, Islington, Middlesex with her parents John and Margaret, and her siblings Frank, James, Charlotte, Alfred, Katherine and Rachel.^[4]

On the 21st July 1861 Margaret was admitted into membership of the Sandemanian Church in London.^[5]

1871 Census on the 2nd April 1871 Margaret was living at 12 Compton Terrace, Islington, Middlesex with her widowed father John, and her siblings Frank, Alfred, Katherine and Rachel. His father's sister-in-law Martha (Lyon) Barnard was also living there.^[6]

Margaret married Alexander Gillies Blaikley on the 15th November 1871 and the marriage was registered in the 4th quarter 1871 in Islington, Middlesex. This was Alexander's third marriage.The newspaper annoucement was: Blaikley - Barnard- Mr A. Blaikley of Kensington to Margaret, daughter of J. Barnard on Canonbury, 15th November 1871.^[7][8]

Their marriage is listed on London Sandemanian Marriages and other links between church members. There were about 70 marriages between the families of the London Sandemanian's of which this was one.

1881 Census on the 3rd April 1881 Margaret was living 6 Courtland Terrace, Kensington, Middlesex with her husband Alexander, and his children from a previous marriage Mary, Jane, Caroline, Henry and Edith. Also living there was his grand-niece Elizabeth M. Sandeman.^[9]

In 1885 Margaret was included in the London Sandemanian Membership List and was described as Blaikley Marg Mrs of 23 Stavordale Road, Highbury N. Her husband Alexander Gillies Blaikley (1816 - 1903) was also a member.

1891 Census on the 5th April 1891 Margaret was living at 23 Stavordale Road, Islington, Middlesex with her husband Alexander.^[10]

1901 Census on the 31st March 1901 Margaret was living at 23 Stavordale Road, Islington, Middlesex with her husband Alexander and his son Henry.^[11]

Margaret, of 12 Highbury Terrace, Islington, Middlesex, died aged 80 on the 7th June 1910 in Islington, Middlesex.^[12]

Probate of Margaret's estate, £1004 1s. 5d., was subject to probate in London on the 22nd June 1910 and passed to her nephews Owen Barnard a member of the Stock Exchange, and to Michael Barnard a silversmith.^[13]

Based originally on a Barnard family bible, and unless otherwise sourced, any precise dates are as shown on hand-written notes (pages 10 and 31) compiled about the 11th December 1878 by John Barnard (1797-1880) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barnard-4046, living at 12 Compton Terrace, Canonbury, Middlesex from before 1861 until his death. Also shown, in different handwriting, is one of his children Katherine Barnard (1844-1912) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barnard-4055 living at 12 Highbury Terrace, Islington, Middlesex from before 1911 until her death, and one of his grandchildren Kate Barnard Blaikley (1879-1969) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Blaikley-22 living at 5 Canfield Gardens, Hampstead, Middlesex from before 1939 until before her death. These hand-written notes record the Barnard family, and others, commencing with William Barnard (1605-1682) through to a John Barnard, a farmer in 1898, living at Haslingfield, 1¼ miles from Barrington, Cambridgeshire, where Barnard ancestors had lived since 1605. A copy of these notes is in the possession of Trevor Pickup (Pickup-177) and Michael Pickup (Pickup-178).
