John Barnard Jr. was born on October 14, 1791 in Bristol, Washington County, Virginia. His parents were Jonathan Barnard (1760 - 1835) and Obedience Bridget (Barnett) Barnard (1768 - 1848).

John died in October 31, 1828 in Grainger, Tennessee, United States aged ~37.^[4]

Research Notes

George Washington Barnard was the oldest child of Jonathan Barnard and Obedience Bridget Barnett (hence the name change-she was William’s Grandmother) Jonathan and Biddy were married in Goochland, Virginia which was Biddy’s home. Jonathan had taken a job as a teacher after the war. He was from Salem, Massachusetts. Long story there as well.

I don’t have my tree in front of me but will do my best. George married Lucretia Griffin—-you will see the name written as Grissom, Gresham, etc., but legally it was Griffin. That fact is proven by the Federal government archives regarding the Trail of Tears.

Lucretia was part Native American. She was one of the children of William Griffin and Susannah ________. William Griffin’s Native American name was Talha Che ca. He is mentioned in a few documents and Grissom Island is named after him.

Lucretia has a sister named Elizabeth who was called Betsy. She was married very young to a man named George Bull who died young. They had two children; Rebecca and Sterling J. Betsy was remarried to a man named Andy Ross and had a third child, Louisa. Betsy died when Louisa was a toddler. Her children were adopted by her sister Mary Polly who was married to John Barnard, thus the Barnard name for Rebecca Bull. John Barnard died young as well and His brother George became the guardian of the children.

Betsy’s daughter Rebecca married young as well, to Peter Leger. They had eight children. This marriage is documented in the Native American National Archives.

Here is some info on Barnard/Barnetts (the name was interchangeable for them) who applied to the Miller Roll, and Condrys with whom they were often intermarried.

Sterling Kyle Condry's application no. 8683, to Miller Roll of Eastern Cherokee, dated Jan. 3, 1907.

Claims thus: "I am one-eight Cherokee by blood; came to Indian Territory in 1881. My mother was about one-half Cherokee Indian and lived in East Tennessee. My grandmother, Betsy Griffin, was on the Indian roll in Old Cherokee Nation, east of the Mississippi." Gives his father's English name as William H. Condrey, and his father's Indian name as Conatschy. In response to questions why his mother was not enrolled in 1851, and why he was never enrolled:

"1. My mother Louisa Condry was never enrolled for the reason that she was in Tennessee and never came to the Cherokee Nation.

2. I was never enrolled for the reason that I was living in Tennessee at the time the roll was made up in 1851.

3. None of my brothers and sisters were enrolled for the same reason.

4. My great grandfather on my mother's side was Ta-le-ske-ske or Griffin and my grandfather on my mother's side was Tahla-che-ca or Griffin in English and my grandmother's name the husband of Tahla-che-ca, was Chaw-ew-ker. If my mother was on the roll it was as Louisa Ross daughter of Andy Ross.

5. I don't know what my Indian name is nor do I know what my mother's Indian name was but she was living in Tennessee in 1851.

6. Daniel Griffin the son of Ta-le-ske-ske my great uncle was the only one of the family who came to the Cherokee Nation with the Old Settlers.

Robert L.C. Barnard, after first being duly sworn, deposes and says:

I am 52 years of age; was born in the Old Cherokee Nation, East Tennessee--Claiborne County. I claim Cherokee Indian blood through my father, Sterling J. Barnard. My father never received any Indian money from the government that I know of and I have never received any. My father came west to the Cherokee Nation in 1869. My father was not a Cherokee allotee and I have never gotten an allotment from the Dawes Commission. I first heard of my Indian blood as far back as I can remember.

I do not know if my father was a voter. I have always voted. My father did not speak the Cherokee language much. I never saw my father's parents. My father's mother lived in Hancock County, Tenn.

My father and mother told me of my Indian blood. The darkies owned by my father always called me Indian and it made me mad. I do not think my father ever lived with the Indians as a member of the tribe.

Subscribed and sworn to before me at Miama, Oklahoma this twenty-second day of August, 1908.

From Find A Grave website bio: - Parents of John Barnard, Jr. were Jonathan "Teacher" Barnard, Sr., born 01/01/1760, in Massachusetts, died 1813 and Obedience Bridget (Biddy) Barnett born 05/17/1768 in Henrico, Virgina and died 1848 in Mercer, Kentucky. John, Jr. married Mary Polly Grissom (or Griffith?) on 11/8/1813 in Knox County, Tennessee. She was half Cherokee Indian. John's cause of death, drowned in the Helston River. John and Mary Polly had six children: George Washington Barnard, Sterling Jefferson Barnard, Alice Louisa Barnett, Martha Rebecca Barnard, Sarah (Sally) Barnard and William Harrison Barnard.
