See Notes below
Richard Barnes was born about 1723. Little is known about Richard Barnes and absolutely nothing is known about his wife, her name, etc. We do know he was the father of at least eight known children:
Children: Elias, Equilles (aka Aquilla), Richard, Samuel, Shadrach, Amos, Abraham, Sarah (Sally). He died after 1778 in Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina.
The Barnes are known to have settled in Rowan County, North Carolina by 1768. In this years, Richard's son Samuel appears on the tax list of Morgan Bryan; the earliest tax record mentioning a Barnes. The Barnes settled in a neighborhood of Dutchman Creek.
Elias, Aquilla and Shadrach were in the revolutionary war. Aquilla was killed at the battle of Cow Pens. Amos, Shadrach and Sally (who married Randall Simms), settled in Madison County, Kentucky. Amos afterward removed to Howard County, Missouri where he lived and died.
Samuel Barnes (1754-1841) married Rachel Turner, the daughter of Thomas Turner and Catherine Catherine Smith.
Shadrach Barnes (1752-1844) was married in Rowan, North Carolina in 1778, to Hannah Turner, the daughter of John Turner and Sarah Elizabeth Williams. Hannah was the aunt of Rachel Turner who married Samuel Barnes. They went to Kentucky to live and by 1830 (or earlier) Shadrach and his family removed to Missouri, and settled in Howard county. He died in Boonville, Mo., in the 92d year of his age.
Aquilla married Dolly Herndon, and settled in Howard county.
Philip married Fanny Barnes, his cousin, and also settled in Howard county. Sally married William Ridgeway, who settled in Boone county.
James married Elizabeth Burkhart, and settled in Boone county. James was one of the noted pioneer Baptist preachers of Missouri, and during the Indian war he taught school in Cooper's Fort, and the afterwards celebrated Kit Carson was one of his pupils. In 1815 he went to New Orleans with a flatboat loaded with nine different kinds of wild meat, besides honey, corn, potatoes, onions, furs, hides, deer and elk horns, etc. He died in 1875, in his 87th year.
Amos Barnes married Dorcas Kincaid, and settled in Boone county. John married Sally Hubbard, and settled in the same county. Abraham married Grace Jones, and settled in Cooper County.
Benjamin married Lucretia Simms, and settled on the line between Boone and Callaway Counties in 1819 and raised a large family of children. He was a sociable old gentleman, and fond of fun and jokes. During his younger days he made seven trips to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and rode the same little pony every time. He was Captain of a wagon train, and received good pay.
Nellie Barnes married Harris Jameson, who settled in Boone county. Thomas married Susan Fields, and settled in Cooper county. Sophia married Jefferson Boggs, a brother of Governor Boggs, and settled in Cooper County."
Richard died after 1778.
Note from Teresa Littlejohn (10-01-2022): I removed the parents of Richard Barnes until we can find proof of his parents. There are too many speculations that look like they belong, but nothing proving Richard is actually from any one of these families. All of the literature I have read does not mention ancestors for this Richard Barnes. There is a gap in the associated "Abraham Barnes"s listed on this wikitree...with one Abraham Sr being a brother of an Abraham Jr. We know that is not right. So, I prefer to leave Richard Barnes without parents until all of the other possibilities can be cleaned up on this website.
I also removed Susanna Searle (1727-abt.1774) as the wife of Richard Barnes. Most family trees include a marriage In 1745 to a Susanna Searle in Rowan, North Carolina (NOTE...there is no evidence of a wife named Susanna Searle for this Richard Barnes). Also, numerous applications for U.S. Sons of the American Revolution Membership Application, 1889-1970 include Richard Barnes with no wife listed.
I hope this info is helpful before anyone just adds a parent or wife to this Richard Barnes. Holler at me if you have any suggestions or questions.

Bud's Big Y-700 test results prove him as a descendant of James Barnes and Keturah Shipley or a brother of James Barnes 1655-1726 of Baltimore, Maryland.
I believe Richard Barnes b. 1723 is the grandson of James Barnes and Keturah Shipley. Pioneer Families of Missouri by Bryan and Rose, published in 1876 did not produce a record of birth or parents for Richard Barnes. A Soldier in the Revolutionary War (1958 Edition). Compiled by Col. Pinckney G. McElwee, Washington, D.C. did not produce any records of birth or parentage. I believe the only record of descent will be the Y-DNA test results of descendants of Richard Barnes Sr of the Forks of the Yadkin River, Boone District, Davidson County ( Old Rowan County ) North Carolina.

I believe this Richard Barnes-10622 is the same person as Gilmer Richard Barnes-Barnes-3872 created 8 Jun 2013.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/33914449 about his payment of tax in 1778. Has anyone found any public documents proving his death before 1778. If not we might change his death date to after 1778.
