Mariah was born in 1802. Birth Place possibly be North Carolina.

She shows up on 1830 Census in the household of her Father Joseph Barnes in Haywood County NC.

She had 2 children that she gave birth out of wedlock and according to the bastardy laws in the 1800's was that any children born out of wedlock could not have the father's surnames and was allowed to have the mother's surname and in the case these 2 children carried on the last name Barnes because Mariah was born an Barnes before she married Richard Price on Dec 1st 1834 at Haywood County.

It is thought that Thomas Barnes is an child of Mariah Barnes. Thomas Barnes was born between 1820- 1824 per the census. We think he might have been a little younger than what he gave out as his birth year. On Mariah's Bastardy Disposition Papers - there were 2 Men listed as the father of her 2 children at the time. We suspect Peter Owen could have been the father of Thomas Barnes

Her other son Henry Harvey Barnes - was born approx. 1827- 1830 - His father is thought to be Daniel Patrick Monroe who also shows up as another father on Mariah's Bastardy Bonds and There are currently two male Henry Barnes descendants ( one of them being my father) who have Y-DNA tested and we believe the closest match currently is a descendant of Daniel P. Monroe.

So the dna evidence supports the Bastardy Bonds. ______________________________________________________________________________

It is believed that Henry Harvey Barnes is an son of Daniel P. Monroe and Mariah Barnes based on the Bastardy Bond and the Y-Dna test.

There was an bastardy bond hearing that took place on January 4th of 1831 in Haywood County NC and on the papers it named Peter Owen and Daniel P. Monroe with Mariah Barnes on there.

Henry H. Barnes was born approximately about 1827- 1829 based on the censuses so that means Henry H. Barnes was between 2- 4 years old when the Bastardy Bond happened.

There are currently two male Henry Barnes descendants ( one of them being my father) who have Y-DNA tested and we believe the closest match currently is a descendant of Daniel P. Monroe.

  • If there are any living male descendants of Henry H. Barnes we encourage you to take an Y- dna test. They will match closely with these two male Henry Barnes descendants already tested on Ftdna. We would appreciate it!

I received an email sharing that Rachel Barnes McFalls was thought to be an child of Mariah Barnes and Daniel P. Monroe based on her age being born in April of 1830 at Haywood Count NC and per the bastardy bond that took place in January of 1831 she would have been roughly about 9 months old when the bastardy bond happened in January 1831.

And also based on Rachel ‘s daughter Anne who died in 1916 had her mother Rachel ‘s last name as Monroe on her death certificate and that is just an coincidence that we come across that so we are asking any living descendant of Rachel Barnes Mcfalls to take an dna test to prove that.

  • If she is in fact Mariah’s daughter any living descendant who takes an dna test should match many of us who already have dna tested and We descend from Mariah Barnes and her son Henry H. Barnes.
      • There are currently two male Henry Barnes descendants who already have Y-DNA tested ( one being my father) and we believe the closest match currently is a descendant of Daniel P. Monroe.

I received new information about Thomas Barnes of Haywood County NC who later moved to Cocke County TN.

For the longest time we believed that Thomas Barnes was an brother or rather half brother to Henry Barnes and we thought perhaps that Thomas Barnes was an child of Mariah Barnes and Peter Owen per the bastardy bond but based on this new information it is thought that Thomas Barnes might be an brother to Mariah Barnes instead and might be an uncle to Henry Barnes but we don’t know for sure so due to this new information received on Thomas Barnes we are needing a male descendant of Thomas Barnes would need to take an Y-dna test to determine if he is Mariah’s sibling or half-sibling, or her child with Peter Owen.

If any male who descends from this Thomas Barnes is willing to take an Y-dna test we would appreciate it very much and debunk these theories we have about him!

Thanks in Advance.
