Biography
Sarah Jane Meason Barnes, daughter of James Barnes and Sarah Jane (Patrick) Barnes, was born in Wittlesea, Cape Colony, on 16 Feb 1832. Her Death Notice states that she is the daughter of George Barnes and Sarah; this cannot be correct as George was married to Anna Maria (Mary) Dugmore and he did not have a daughter named Sarah Jane.[1]
Sarah married three times and was thrice a widow. She first married Douglas Stephen in about 1851; two sons were born of this marriage:
- James Oscar Stephen, born 8 October 1852.
- Alfred Douglas Stephen, born 18 October 1854.
Douglas died at the age of 26 in 1856 and Sarah then married an Irishman named Timothy Swain Mills Knight in about 1858. This marriage produced four children:
- Arthur Knight, born 24 March 1860.
- George Luke Knight, born 1862.
- Timothy Swain Mills Knight, born 28 December 1863.
- Helen Elizabeth Anne Knight, born 28 December 1863.
Timothy died on 7 May 1863, before the birth of the abovementioned twins. Sarah, now a young widow with six children, married the 45 year old widower William Goldswain on 26 May 1868 in Grahamstown.[2]

Four children were born of this marriage:
- William Rupert Jeremiah Goldswain, born 18 October 1869.
- Gilbert Henry Barnes Goldswain, born 25 November 1871.
- Walter Sydney Goldswain, born 1873.
- Clement Tyson George Goldswain, born 17 September 1878.
Sarah passed away in her 76th year on the 16th of August 1907 in her residence in Grahamstown.[3]

She is buried in the Old Cemetery in Grahamstown:[4][5]
